This part was very cosy to read as I’ve done this before Alhamdulilah. ”There's a plethora of ways to stay connect my future self, by writing her letters or creating a vision board, but my favourite way is through dua.”
I like that anecdote about fountains. I always wondered why we did that as kids! Do kids even do this anymore?
Duas are so important for all our goals - great reminder! :)
As for me, my "favorite" way of setting goals is writing them down on my journal and then doing my best to fulfill them. Most of them are just continuation of general goals - health, spiritual, professional. With my writing goals, I'm kind of using my Substack to document my progress.
I love that, I write in my journal to document my progress and that's where I make my habit tracker too. I think general goals are really important and helps us make progress in those areas and new ways to grow in them. Goal setting is not about creating exciting and adventurous goals, those are very occasional moments.
I love the fact you threw in about the metals in coins having antimicrobial properties. It makes me feel good about throwing a bunch of change in water fountains when I was younger to "make a wish". 😆
There are a few layers involved in being able to achieve your goals. There's prayer (or affirmations for the non-religious) as you mentioned, having the faith in both the divine and in yourself that your goal with be achieved, and actively working towards that goal. One of my favorite Hadiths from when I was a kid was, "Trust in Allah, but tie your camel." And I try to maintain that philosophy when I want to achieve something.
Have you heard of Visionaire, by the late Shaykh Muhammad Al-Shareef of Al Maghrib Institute / Discover U Life? I'm not sure if they still run it, but do some research and see. They might run it again in Ramadaan.
I did Visionaire online about 10 years ago. It's an excellent programme, if you follow through with everything so I would definitely recommend it. It marries goal setting and dua together, so it's perfect for what you're talking about.
the most effective way for me so far is also using a daily habit tracker, for short term goals. i tried designing my own visionboard for the coming year to capture my long term goals but i can't tell how effective that would be yet.
all these would definitely be defective without du'ā, though. du'ā is perhaps my biggest motivation cos i know i need Allāh's help in achieving every single one of my goals.
Yess other tools like vision boards and habit trackers help but they're no replacement for dua!
That's so exciting that you created a vision board, it's so fun. It's good to try new things to figure out what works for you. Insha'Allah it works out!
I agree with the concept of guiding and paving the way for our future selves, and by doing so, laying the foundations for who we aspire to become.
Also acknowledging the fact that we are part of an Ummah, and we have an obligation to contribute meaningfully to it. This can only be achieved if we strive to be the best versions of ourself.
