You know I’ve always wondered the same! Indian people consume maida and basmati and up think recently, obesity was not a problem. About a year ago, a nutritionist who works at my functional doctors office said the white rice is actually easier to digest than brown rice, and suggests the former rather than the latter. That goes against all the “nutrition” advice I’ve read since I started eating healthier. My favorite baked food is chocolate cake!!!

Ya I think a big part of obesity problem is also the significant change in our lifestyle. Before exercise was a very natural part of our everyday life and now we have make intentional time out for it, which many people are unlikely todo. There is also the over-availability of ultra-processed foods.

That's so interesting, I didn't know about the white rice! But I had some speculations too because Japanese people eat really healthy have centenarians and their diet is also based heavily on white rice. It was really hard for me to validate this idea because there is so much propaganda towards whole grains it creates a reality in which it's impossible to eating anything else.

I love chocolate cake too!!

Yeah, and like I read all these articles that say even running doesn't outdo all the sitting we do all day. And I'm like, what are we supposed to do?

Good point about Japanese food and people! Although they also have a high suicide rate - but it's not related to their food, I don't think.

No way! Maybe periodic exercise throughout the day not just one isolated session?! 😭

Ya probably the toxic corporate culture.

Well, unless my legs are sore, I do try to walk around later in the day. But I don't want to have to take multiple showers in a day after exercising. I try not to put too much stock into these pop science articles. I used to and they were impossible to follow.

Ya I've heard a lot about elaborate morning routines and dietary regimes are often a very occasional thing. I think they should just be used as general ideas for some healthy habits but to be honest with health, I feel like what's more important if gauging how you feel. Overexercising can also be harmful, so if you feel well then that's what matters most.

Such an informative and intriguing post Leena!! 😍 I always look forward to them as I walk away learning one key thing and I love that. I love the Quran interpretations too about diet and I’ll definitely be keeping them in mind. I’d say my favourite baked good would have to be toast too hehe <33

Leena, I appreciate the amount of research you put into this post! I had no idea that historically, whole grain breads were thought of as lower class sources of food. It's ironic how it's the opposite in the 21st century.

It's funny you mentioned desi food containing whole wheat because I was craving parathas the other day and ordered them from a desi restaurant right?? And when I received the order, they were made from all purpose flour so they were thicker and chewier than the whole wheat parathay my mom makes 😭

Gluttony is a big sin in many religions and honestly rightfully so! Just the feeling of overeating is terrible, and gets worse as you age. I used to be able to eat so much junk in my teens and early 20s and now in my late 20s I feel like garbage after eating a few slices of pizza. I like the cultural concept of eating until you are 80% full in Japan (hara hachi bu).

I was so confused too when I learned about the history of eating habits!

Absolutely, every culture has a concept of not overeating, we don't need science to validate every practice that exists in culture and the things cultural eating habits that have been validated by science makes me question the validity of non-cultural but 'scientific' eating habits.

Thank you for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it and may we enjoy more authentic desi parathay!!
